Top 10 SEO News And Advice Websites

December 30th, 2010 · Collection

At the end of the year we often try to summarize our experience and make conclusions and projections for the next year.

So, in this issue, we are offering you ratings of the best websites that we recommend to you as valuable sources of news, tips and tricks related to website promotion and SEO. We’ve tried to be objective and we’ve used traffic trends (according to Google and Compete) and social mentions on Twitter as signals. The results often did not agree with how our experts’ subjective opinions would have rated these sites. We have considered only the educational part of site content, although many of these sites also provide tools, training and services.

1. DigitalPoint Forums

These forums seem to be the absolute champion both in traffic and Twitter mentions. We recommend the forums for beginners – you will find quick answers there because of the large number of participants, but quantity does not always mean quality.

2. Search Engine Journal

For the past year, the SEJ has made a remarkable achievement in growing their community. Loud applause for Lauren Baker, the Search Engine Journal’s Editor in Chief.

3. Search Engine Land

Actually, we expected this site to be number one or two. Danny Sullivan and Chris Sherman are legendary SEO experts and they and their great contributing editors provide important insights into industry news and trends.

4. SitePoint

You can find here a lot of online and downloadable tutorials, blogs and forums with a wealth of great information for any level of webmaster expertise.

5. WebProNews

If you like video information, WebProNews is your destination point to view all of the great interviews that Mike McDonald publishes.

6. Searchenginewatch.com & Clickz.com

Those two properties of Incisive Interactive, with Mike Grehan as the VP & Global Content Director, provide great articles covering web marketing and SEO news and events.

7. SEO Chat

SEO Chat is one of the most SEO-focused sites. You will find SEO news, articles and forums here. This is a great site for SEO beginners.

8. SEO Book

One of the highest trafficked SEO sites according to Google, with a great SEO community, forums and articles. The community leaders here are Aaron Wall and Peter da Vanzo.

9. SEOmoz

Yes, we also thought that Gillian Muessig and Rand Fishkin Team’s brainchild should have been placed higher up on the list. SEOmoz is a great community producing a lot of interesting and helpful content.

10. Sphinn

This site aggregates the best news and how-to articles related to SEO, social media promotion and Internet marketing in general.

Some great SEO sites escaped our top 10, but we’d like you to also considerWebmasterWorld.com, Webmaster-Talk.com, Search Engine Roundtable andMarketingVox as your ongoing channels for SEO and web marketing news and advice.

AdSense Newsletter- December 2010

December 11th, 2010 · Collection

Optimization: Tip of the month

Activate your ad units for text and image ads for maximum earnings

Did you know that by simply opting all of your ad units into both text and image, you could see a significant increase in your AdSense revenue?
By opting all of your units into text and image ads, you are increasing the competition among the ads competing to appear on your site, as both test and rich media ads (image, flash, video and gadget) will compete in the same ad auction to appear on your site. Our system will always automatically display the ads which will yield the highest earnings for you.
With increased advertiser spend on placement-targeted advertising, particularly now during the holiday season, enabling image ads means you are also competing for these extra dollars. You can use the Ad Review Center (ARC) to review any ads placement-targeted to your site.

For these reasons, many AdSense publishers experience significant uplift after making this change.

If you use the new AdSense interface, follow these steps to activate text and image ads.

If you use the old AdSense interface, follow these steps to activate text and image ads.
See for yourself how this simple change can positively impact your revenue!

Top AdSense Updates

The new AdSense interface

Bringing you more insights, controls, and efficiency, the new AdSense interface is now available to all publishers globally! When you sign in to your AdSense account, click the "Try the new AdSense interface beta" link in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. As you start to get a feel for the interface, visitgoogle.com/ads/newadsense to check out our Getting Started guide, view our video series and learn more about some of the new features.

Prevent invalid clicks

Just a quick pointer about not encouraging people to click on advertisements: Sometimes publishers – without meaning to break the rules — write something like, "If you click on my ads, you’ll help support my free site." We understand your excitement for AdSense, but in order to maximize user, advertiser, and publisher experience, we need to strive for completely "natural clicks." Check out this blogpost that helps clarify our policy.

Ad Planner 1000 for October 2010

Sports enthusiasts have always shown their impact on the Ad Planner 1000 and this month is no different. We saw the nba.com debut at 552 and as the World Series heated up in October, so didmlb.com which experienced a 10% increase in the number of unique visitors to the site.

Movies were also a hot topic this fall as traffic to Fandago.com increased 11% and moviefone.comdebuted on the list at 1000. Warnerbros.com also entered the Top 1000 list at 995, perhaps in anticipation of November’s release of the latest Harry Potter film. And in other entertainment news,hulu.com saw a 11% spike in unique users as the fall television episodes have made their way onto the site thanks to their network partnerships.

We also saw local coupon offer sites continue to gain in popularity. Livingsocial.com experienced a whopping 21% increase in unique users in October and groupon.com saw a 8% increase. Sites experiencing a decline in traffic in October include pandora.com (- 9%), toysrus.com (- 9%),surveymonkey.com (-11%) and skype.com (-10%).

The Ad Planner Marketplace beta is currently available to users of DoubleClick for Advertisers. In this beta release, ad placements are only available from publishers selling in US dollars. New Ad Planner Case Study: Crocs

Learn how advertisers have successfully used Ad Planner to put together display campaigns with this case study from Crocs.

Partway into 2009, the marketing team at Crocs took some tentative steps to explore display advertising after years of focusing mostly on search advertising. Thanks to the help of DoubleClick Ad Planner, the Crocs team was able to easily research audiences and discover sites where they could target their core demographic.

"The targeting that Ad Planner offers, the speed by which we can optimize, and the support from the Google team made our campaign a complete success," said Jay Custard, Croc’s global online marketing director.
